Staying at Skaret by Vander means being part of the city’s daily rhythm. Storgata, the main pedestrian street, keeps its shops, cafés, and bakeries busy year-round, while the harbor a few minutes away is where fishing boats, ferries, and whale safari tours come and go. The Hurtigruten coastal ferry also docks nearby at Prostneset most nights, one of its longest port calls on the whole Norwegian coast, and in summer the city stays lively well past midnight under the midnight sun.

Tromsø sits on the island of Tromsøya, connected to the mainland by the Tromsø Bridge and the Tromsøysund Tunnel, and is home to UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the northernmost university in the world, with more than 16,000 students. The university also runs the Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden, the world’s northernmost botanic garden, a short walk from the city center. That mix of Arctic remoteness and university-town energy gives Tromsø a lively, youthful character rarely found this far north, even during the polar night from late November to mid-January, when the sun does not rise above the horizon at all and a comfortable, well-lit apartment to return to makes a real difference. Locals and visitors mix easily here, whether over coffee while checking the northern lights forecast, or heading out for a walk along Tromsøya’s hillsides in the midnight sun.
