Vander and Midgard Gruppen to convert Bergen office buildings into apartment hotels

Vander and Midgard Gruppen will transform former office buildings in Christies gate and Strandgaten into apartment hotels, supporting additional accommodation capacity in central Bergen.

Overview

Vander and Midgard Gruppen plan to redevelop office properties in Christies gate and Strandgaten into apartment hotels in Bergen city centre. The initiative aims to strengthen the city’s accommodation offering while supporting sustainable urban development.

Midgard Gruppen owns the properties, and the agreement marks a further step in Vander’s expansion in Bergen following the opening of Vander Altona in Strandgaten.

Announcement

The partners aim to contribute to freeing up housing capacity while addressing pressure from short-term rental platforms. Vander’s model focuses on converting commercial real estate rather than using existing residential housing stock.

“Airbnb continues to grow across the accommodation market. For us, this represents both a market opportunity and a chance to address pressure on the housing market.”
— Ole Henrik Engen, Founder and CEO, Vander

Market context

Once completed, Vander is expected to operate more than 300 professionally managed apartments in Bergen. The development supports demand for flexible accommodation while contributing to a more balanced housing market.

The revitalisation will also activate historic buildings in central Bergen by opening ground floors to public-facing uses and strengthening connections with the surrounding urban environment.
